OUR DREAMS

Peer-to-peer training: A fundamental aspect of our work in Tanzania has been the introduction, roll-out and development of a strong peer-to-peer training programme and support network. This intervention is unique to Songambele and sees experienced wheelchair users share their stories, as well as knowledge, skills and learning with individuals new to using a wheelchair or recently disabled. This has been trialled in various formats from small group sessions, to one-to-one visits, either at hospital where a spinal cord injury patient is undergoing rehabilitation, or in the individual’s home. The focus to date has been on building confidence and self-esteem, helping individuals and their families to understand their rights, as well as giving them the practical skills to manage their health, wellbeing and independence.

This peer-to-peer approach has been overwhelmingly successful and acknowledged by community as an effective way to overcome stigma and negative attitudes as well as a way of engaging disabled people to raise awareness and empower other wheelchair users in their communities.
